AMS is the highest accreditation awarded by SAMS, which is recognized worldwide as the leader in survey professionals. Surveys completed by SAMS surveyors are readily accepted by banks, and insurance companies worldwide. The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors only accepts membership from those professionals who have demonstrated the technical skills, expertise and experience to be qualified marine surveyors. In order to remain a member in good standing, members must participate in a program of continuing education every year.

Types of Surveys - Sea Spirit Services offers three different types of surveys depending on the need of the client. The following surveys are all in accordance with the internationally recognized Society of Marine Surveyors standards.

This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and the overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This includes such items as structural integrity, out of water inspection, sea trial, electrical systems, propulsion system, fuel system, machinery, navigation, misc. on board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance.

This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessels fair market value.

This inspection is performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel. This is normally needed for financing, estate settlements, donations, and legal cases.

Captain Don Tondro of Sea Spirit Services has been a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captain for over 35 years. He currently holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master of Oceans for motor vessels up to 1600 tons and sail vessels up to 100 tons upon oceans. During Don's extensive marine career, he served as captain or chief engineer on large research ships which cruised in all of the world's oceans. See his resume for more details. Captain Don Tondro understands all aspects of boat design and construction from the keel up, because he has personally surveyed, bought and restored numerous boats of his own, including two sail boats. He and his wife, Sally, refitted and sailed their 60 foot sailboat "Sea Comber" from California to Florida via the Panama Canal, and then cruised all through the Bahamas.
